St James and Emmanuel Services

St James entrance

Our normal service pattern is listed below. From February 2012 all services will be at Emmanuel for a few months as building work takes place at St James.

Mid-week Services

There is normally a short act of worship at 9 am each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  On Tuesdays there is an informal Holy Communion service and on Wednesdays and Thursdays we gather for Morning Prayer.  All these services are normally finished by 9.30 am. In addition on the first Wednsday of each month we gather for an extend Morning Prayer where we take a little extra time to pray for a wide range of local and global issues.

Sunday Services

St James and Emmanuel normally offer four diverse worship services each Sunday.  A brief guide to each service is outlined below but please use the links on the left to get the specific information for services in the coming weeks.

St James 9 am Traditional Holy Communion

This is a traditional Holy Communion Service using Common Worship Order Two in traditional language which is very similar to the historic Book of Common Prayer Service.  Musically, the service features organ led traditional hymns, and on the second and fourth weeks of each month a choir sings some of the liturgy.  The service lasts for just under an hour and is a valued quiet space to begin our sunday worship.  There are no children's groups during this service but there is a parent supervised creche for parents with children under four years of age.

St James 10.30 am  Family Worship

This is a family-friendly mid-morning service with an informal but traditional feel.  The pattern of services is normally an all-age baptism service on the first week of the month, Holy Communion on the second and fourth week, and Morning Prayer on the third week.  In addition to a parent supervised creche there are children's groups for children from 2 1/2 most Sundays.  Musically the services are a combination of traditional hymns and more modern songs, normally accompanied on the organ or a piano.

Emmanuel 10.30 am Family Worship

This is a family-friendly mid-morning service with an informal and contemporary feel.  The pattern of services is an all-age Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month, morning prayer on the second and fourth Sunday, and Holy Communion on the third Sunday.  In addition to a parent supervised creche there are children's groups for children from 2  most Sundays.  Musically the services are predominently comprised of modern worship songs, normally led by a worship band.  There is coffee available from 10 am before the Emmanuel 10.30 am services.

Emmanuel 18.15 Evening Worship

Our evening congregation is a place for experimentation. We recognise that we are diverse congregation and within that diversity we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all approach but attempt to model diversity in worship. One week the service maybe contemplative and yet another week it may have a more charismatic feel.  Within that diversity we share communion twice a month, sometimes using an Iona liturgy and at other times drawing from the Taize community.  Above all we like to experiment, come along and join with us in our experimentation!
